Karl Foerster Grass Calamagrostis arundinacea

Characteristics: 3-4' compact form, increasing up to 5' when in bloom. Golden flowers emerge early for being a grass species.

Native Habitat: Found throughout Eurasia in meadows and other open sites. Prefers rich mesic soils in full sun, but can tolerate wetter clay soils or dry soils as well.

Value: Very hardy grass used in large sweeps in sunny perennial borders. Stalks persist through the winter for seasonal interest. Great as a backdrop plant.

Ostritch Fern Matteuccia struthiopteris

Characteristics: A taller fast spreading fern with bold arching foliage. Portions persist in winter.

Native Habitat: Found throughout much of North America. Occurs in wet marshy areas along streams, but hardy enough to grow almost anywhere in the shade.

Value: When allows to fill in and naturalize a space, Ostrich ferns provide a pleasing yet bold statement.

Sweet Woodruff Galium odoratum

Characteristics: Low ground cover with brilliant green elaborate foliage, creating a soft and flowing look. Tiny white flowers are surprisingly powerful when occurring in a mass.

Native Habitat: Prefers shady moist conditions, but can tolerate some sunlight as well. Will spread quickly when not watched.

Value: Planted in large sweeps at the front of perennial borders, or for massing along hardscape elements. Works well when planted under decorative trees. Hardy and fast spreading.

'Grow-lo' Fragrant Sumac Sumac aromatica 'grow-lo'

Characteristics: Low spreading shrub with a picturesque form. Interesting green foliage turns a orange-red in fall. Berries persist through the winter.

Native Habitat: NATIVE CULTIVAR. Eastern North America. Suitable across a range of soil conditions. Grows in shade to full sun.

Value: Wonderful plant adaptable to a variety of applications, from use as a naturalized border to stabilizing slopes. Planted in large drifts for dramatic effect. Hardy and reliable.

Siberian Bugloss Brunnera macrophylla

Characteristics: Large foliage with excellent texture. Subtle but interesting spring flowers.

Native Habitat: Western Caucasus and Siberia. Prefers moist soil conditions and shade, but tolerates some dryness.

Value: Good deer-proof alternative to Hostas. Planted for its interesting foliage. Great when used in large sweeps along a perennial boarder.

Tulip Tree Liriodendron tulipifera

Characteristics: 70-90' tall by 35-50' wide. Bright green unique leaves with a golden yellow fall color. Splendid spring blooms.

Native Habitat: NATIVE. Eastern North America. Prefers to grow under full sun in loamy mesic soils. Becomes a dominant forest over story tree.

Value: The American "gingko" with its unique leaf shape. A hardy, fast growing, and under utilized native.

White Pine Pinus Strobus

Characteristics: Generally 50-80' high, 20-40' wide. Clusters of fine needles and towering form provides a soft, majestic look.

Native Habitat: NATIVE. Eastern United States and Canada. Fertile, moist but well drained soils. Prefers sun. Tolerant of dry conditions.

Value: Michigan State Tree. A reliable conifer that can be planted in tight spaces, and limbed up later to create a pleasing over-story tree.
